49ers Release Asomugha, Activate Manningham and Wright

The 49ers have released Nnamdi Asomugha to make room for newly activated Eric Wright on the roster, and also activated Mario Manningham.

The release of Asoumugha has been rumored for weeks, and it makes sense.  Asomugha is an aging veteran who has one role, cover receivers on the outside.  Wright is younger and brings the versatility of being able to play both inside and outside.

It will be interesting to see how the team utilizes Wright, who does not play special teams.  Current 3rd cornerback, Tramaine Brock has played himself into the role, which is part of what made Asomugha expendable.  The current number two slot corner, Perrish Cox is also a key contributor on special teams.

Also, Nate Stupar who was released last week was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Stupar had been a standout on special teams and the 49ers were hoping to add him to the practice squad.
